Paris (both the city of Paris and Île-de-France region) is the most important economic region in France, and  the city of Paris is one of four major global cities. The region of Paris accounts for approximately 30% of France’s GDP. The top 10 French companies mentioned in the Fortune Global 500 last year, all have their headquarters in Paris. Of the 31 French companies on the list, 29 of them had their headquarters in France.

Six of the twelve biggest companies in Paris are banks and insurance companies. The Paris region was also the birthplace of the French automobile industry, and in 2014 France was named as the 13th largest manufacturer of automobiles in the world, and the third largest after Germany and Spain. PSA Peugeot Citroēn and Renault SA both have their headquarters in Paris.

Paris is also home to Total – one of the five largest oil companies in the world, the headquarters of Carrefour SA – the fourth largest food and drug store chain in the world, the headquarters of Orange SA – the 15th largest telecommunications company in the world and number one in France, and Vivendi – Europe’s largest film and audiovisual company.
