On Business

Rio’s economy is the second largest regional economy in Brazil, the fourth richest city in Latin America and Brazil’s second largest financial centre.

Rio is home to the headquarters of a wide range of private, national, multinational and state corporations, even in cases where their factories are located in other cities. Even when the capital was moved from Rio to Brasilia, most corporations chose to remain in Rio., including Petrobras, the state oil company, and the National Economic and Social Development Bank.

Manufacturing plays a key role in the city’s economy, as the traditional industries such as metallurgy, engineering and printing and publishing are joined by electronics and computing. The production of shipyard related materials, textiles, non-metallic mineral products and pharmaceuticals all play a key role in supporting the city’s economy. Construction is a key source of employment for a large number of unskilled workers in the city.
